Rajam Roose CEO Founder San Diego Pain Summit

The San Diego Pain Summit (SDPS) is a conference helping clinicians provide care for their patients based in current pain research. The SDPS aims to connect clinical practice and pain research together under one roof in an interdisciplinary gathering. The conference format is linear, affording each participant access to all of the presentations available without having to choose between equally relevant and important topics.

This event was founded by Rajam Roose and formed in a spur of the moment idea. Back in 2014, she was organizing continuing education workshops for manual and physical therapists.

During a break at one workshop, she overheard the instructor asking the students (who had recently graduated from a physical therapy program) if they were learning updated pain research in their programs.  And if they were familiar with pain research experts such as Patrick Wall, David Butler, Lorimer Moseley, etc.

The students nodded their heads, yes, and then one spoke out and replied: "Yes, we were taught current pain research at my school but I have no idea how to apply it into my practice."

A flash of an idea and the Summit was born. Without any prior experience managing a conference, Rajam Roose created this event and found success from the start, as the idea received strong support from Professor Lorimer Moseley, who came all the way over from Australia to give two 90 minute keynote presentations at the premier event in 2015 in San Diego, California

The SDPS was born from a passion to create an event where clinicians can have a meeting space where it is okay to be uncertain, where it is understood that there are no definitive answers to treating pain. Under the umbrella of the SDPS, Rajam Roose has nurtured a supported space where clinicians can feel comfortable in asking the questions to help find deeper meaning in the frameworks used to help their patients.

The sense of community is another key reason people attend the Summit, and the value of community is fostered and strengthened throughout the Summit through the annual Dinner Party, during breaks, and in the hands-on workshops.

The SDPS is a grassroots event solely managed and organized by Rajam. This event has unexpectedly grown and continued to thrive without any corporate sponsorship or grants and has been supported solely based on the generosity from the presenters, who gladly share their expertise and from the registration fees paid in order to attend these events.

Rajam is a strong supporter of including the patient voice in clinical pain conferences. Since 2018, she has included the perspectives of pain advocates on the stage at SDPS conferences and found their powerful voices to be a necessity in improving patient care. These recordings have been compiled onto a Patient Resources page and are free for anyone to watch.

Additionally, all conferences have been live-streamed and recorded since the premier event in 2015 and can be found on Pain Summit Online, (along with a detailed list of prior conference presenters), which provides additional financial support for future Summit events.
